Game Badges:

The most common type, crafted from trading card sets. One badge per game with trading card support, can be crafted 5 times (levels 1-5), provides 100 XP per level (500 total per game).

Foil Badges:

Special shiny versions of game badges crafted from rare foil trading cards. Only one level available, distinctive shiny appearance, significantly more expensive to craft.

Event Badges:

Limited-time badges from Steam sales and special events. Available only during specific events, often craftable many times, typically good XP per cost ratio.

Community Badges:

Earned through participation and milestones:

Pillar of Community: Based on account age and library size (up to 500 XP)

Years of Service: Automatically earned each year (50 XP per year)

Community Ambassador: Earned through helpful community contributions

Game Collector Badges:

Automatically earned as your library grows at 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000+ games. Provides 200 XP per level.

Special Badges:

Unique badges from various sources like Steam Deck ownership, Steam Awards participation, and beta testing.

The Crafting Process:

1. Collect complete set of trading cards for a specific game

2. Navigate to your Badges page on Steam

3. Select game with complete card set

4. Click "Prepare to craft badge" and confirm

5. Receive XP, badge, and random items instantly

6. Repeat to craft next level (up to level 5)

Badge Levels Explained:

Most game badges progress through 5 levels. Each level requires a complete new set of cards. You cannot "upgrade" a badge - you must craft from scratch each time.

Crafting Without Owning the Game:

You can craft badges for games you don't own by buying the cards from Community Market or traders. The badge permanently appears on your profile. This is how efficient levelers reach high levels.

Guaranteed Rewards:

100 XP applied immediately to your Steam level

The badge itself as permanent addition to your profile

Badge XP display showing total XP contribution

Random Item Drops:

Each craft gives you 3 random items from the game's pool:

Emoticons: Text chat emoticons themed after the game

Profile Backgrounds: Custom backgrounds for your profile

Discount Coupons: Occasionally, coupons for games or DLC

Showcase Display:

Badges can be featured in your profile's badge showcase. Display up to 5 badges in your featured showcase, choose badges that represent your favorite games.

The Completionist Approach:

Goal: Collect all 5 levels for your favorite games. Focus on games you actually own and enjoy, craft all 5 regular levels plus the foil badge, display max-level badges in your showcase.

The Efficient Leveler Approach:

Goal: Maximum XP per dollar spent. Only craft badges for cheapest games, don't care about which games - focus on cost, usually craft level 1 only then move to next cheap game.

The Rare Badge Hunter Approach:

Goal: Collect exclusive and limited badges. Participate in all Steam events for event badges, craft beta or limited-time badges, collect badges from delisted games.

The Hybrid Approach:

Goal: Balance between favorites, efficiency, and rarity. Craft all 5 levels for 10-20 favorite games, craft level 1 for 200+ cheap games, participate in major Steam events.

Showcase Selection Strategy:

Slot 1: Your highest level badge (shows dedication)

Slot 2: Rare event badge (shows account history)

Slot 3: Favorite game at level 5 (shows gaming taste)

Slot 4: Community badge (shows participation)

Slot 5: Another favorite or achievement badge

Visual Impact:

Level 5 badges have more impressive visuals, foil badges have distinctive shine, event badges often have unique artwork. Choose badges with appealing color schemes and consider how they look together as a set.

When to Craft:

You want to increase your Steam level

You love the game and want to display the badge

The badge is from a limited event

Cards are cheap and badge value is high

When to Sell:

Cards are expensive (especially foils)

You don't care about Steam level

You prefer Steam Wallet funds for games

The badge crafting cost exceeds item value

Optimal Strategy:

Most experienced collectors sell expensive foil cards, craft cheap regular badges, save favorite game cards for level 5 crafting, sell all items received from crafting immediately, and reinvest proceeds into more cheap badges.
